Take flight. Dream big. Make it happen.
Birds Learning Network is an online learning platform and community partner grounded in cultural, historical, and linguistic literacy — open to learners of every background. Build real reading, writing, and communication skills; earn certifications; and grow toward the career or education goal you're working for, through courses and modules built around your identity, your schedule, and where you're headed next.
But why birds? The name carries a story worth telling.
Learning that starts from who you are, not who you should become.
Our name comes from Sankofa — depicted across West African tradition as a bird reaching backward to retrieve an egg from its own back, carrying forward what matters most as it flies ahead. That's the spirit behind Birds Learning Network: reaching back into cultural, historical, and linguistic heritage isn't a detour from progress, it's the flight path itself.
Alongside Sankofa, we're guided by Ubuntu — "I am because we are." Where Sankofa shapes how we look back to reclaim what's ours, Ubuntu shapes how we learn together: mentorship, coaching, and peer support built on the belief that no one grows in isolation.
We're pioneering a future where online learning becomes a transformative force — merging the richness of cultural heritage with cutting-edge digital innovation. Literacy here goes beyond a skill: it's a journey of self-discovery, resilience, and empowerment, open to learners of every background who want to grow through these principles.
Every course is built to celebrate your identity while equipping you with the tools to navigate the world with confidence, from elementary learners through adult and professional learners.

UBUNTUI am because we are.
That philosophy didn't start with a company. It started with one educator's own story.
Kathy Lewis
Championing cultural, historical, and linguistic literacy
20+ years of online and in-person teaching experience
Kathy Lewis is an educator dedicated to reshaping the intersections of language, identity, and cultural empowerment. She holds a B.A. and B.Ed. in English and Criminology from York University and a Master's in Social Justice Education from OISE, University of Toronto, where she is currently pursuing a PhD in Social Justice Education.
Her mission started in her own classroom experience — corrected for how she spoke, watching her culture show up as an afterthought in the curriculum, and learning early that "success" seemed to mean leaving parts of herself at the door. That's exactly what BLN exists to undo: here, no learner has to choose between who they are and how far they can go.
Literacy is a cultural practice tied to pride, belonging, and self-expression — not just a technical skill.
Here's what that looks like in practice
Cultural literacy
Drawing on real traditions and lived experience, so every learner sees their own identity reflected and celebrated.
Historical literacy
Equipping learners to engage critically with their ancestry and community legacies.
Linguistic literacy
However you already talk and write is a real skill, not a mistake to correct — we build your reading, writing, and communication from there, so it actually sticks.
Kathy's mission takes shape across nine course flyways, built for every stage of learning.
Our courses cover
Real skills for real life — practical, personal, and built around who you already are.
Language development
Grammar, reading, and persuasive writing that honor how you already speak — home dialects and all — while sharpening the skills that open doors.
Social skills & communication
Interpersonal skills, public speaking, and active listening — because connection is a skill you can practice, not a trait you're born with.
Critical & creative thinking
Sharpen how you think and spark how you create — break down tough problems, then turn what you learn into something worth making.
History & heritage
The movements, figures, and struggles that shaped the world — resistance movements, diasporas, and stories of resilience across cultures and generations.
Storytelling & cultural narratives
Oral histories, folktales, and spoken word — plus the digital tools to tell your story on your own terms.
Professional development
Business writing, financial literacy, and entrepreneurial skills grounded in collaboration and ethical leadership.
Community & social engagement
Lead initiatives that uplift communities, foster intergenerational learning, and promote environmental stewardship — because growth is never a solo project.
Media & technology
Digital, film, and media literacy, plus practical software skills — spreadsheets, word processing, presentations — and AI literacy for the tools shaping today's world.
Art & creative expression
Visual art, music, dance, and theater — mediums that let you say what words alone can't, building toward a portfolio you're proud to show.
Because learning looks different depending on where you are in life.
Find your stage. Start your story.
Whatever stage you're at, there's a path built for you, not a one-size-fits-all course. Tap a stage and swipe through its story.

Introducing
reImagination
To reimagine is to look at your life and see what else is possible.
Reimagination is the courage to dream beyond what you were told was possible, and the skills to build it. When you read, you take in new worlds. When you write, you shape your own. When you create, you design a future that fits who you truly are.
reImagination is where literacy becomes possibility. It is where you reclaim your story, reconnect with your identity and culture, and gain the reading, writing, digital and creative tools to innovate, lead and build the life you imagine, on your own terms.

Your story deserves to be written.

- ◉Finish with a portfolio piece
From first spark to finished piece: here’s how your story takes flight.

Creative Writing: Critical Perspectives on Literature as Art
Explore literature as a work of art — shaped by a writer's craft and life, and open to analysis from every angle: form, technique, and the world it came from. You'll build real skills for reading, creating, and critiquing writing, always starting from your own perspective and experience.
Introduction to Creative Writing
Get grounded in the basics: what makes writing "creative," and how to start putting your own ideas on the page.
Studying the Features of Creative Writing
Stretch your skills by studying how published writers build voice, structure, and style — then borrow what works for you.
Design Your Own Project
Chart your own course: plan and create a project that's entirely yours, from first idea to finished draft.
Use This Project as Part of Your Portfolio
Take your finished piece and turn it into something you can show off — proof of what you're capable of.
Zoom out, and every course fits into a bigger journey.
How the journey works
Four waypoints, one route. You'll always know exactly where you are.
Choose a route
Tell us your goal and your schedule. We'll suggest a course built around both.
Work through modules
Short, focused modules you can complete in the pockets of time you actually have.
Get real feedback
Instructors and peers review your work at every checkpoint, not just at the end.
Land the outcome
Finish with a certificate, a portfolio piece, or a skill you can use starting Monday.
